Temporomandibular Joint Disorder… “TMJ” for Short

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, Headaches, TMJ, Neuromuscular Dentistry

Simply put, Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD — also abbreviated as TMJ), is when your jaw joints are out of alignment, and many uncomfortable or painful symptoms begin to appear.

A severe and recurrent headache is one of the most common symptoms of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. Many TMD sufferers consider them the most painful and debilitating of the symptoms, and some describe them as "migraines".

You might have been living with some of these TMJ symptoms for years, because many people who suffer from TMJ do not realize it. They notice the chronic headaches, the sleep difficulty, and the ringing in their ears, for example, but do not realize that these disparate symptoms all stem from the same dental condition.

While some causes of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder reside in genetics, the majority of cases result from an accident in your past. If you have been suffering from the symptoms of TMD for a prolonged period of time and no doctor has relieved you of your pain, think about your history:

•    Were you involved in a car accident where you suffered whiplash or a trauma to your head?
•    Did you participate in heavy contact sports in your youth such as football, hockey, rugby etc.?
•    Did you ever have improper dental work performed on you?
•    Have you ever suffered from a concussion?

If you said "Yes" to any of the above questions and suffer from the symptoms of TMD, you should consult Dr. Coleman about having him examine your jaw. However, if you are diagnosed with Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, it will be impossible to alleviate your pain until you address the issues propelling you toward the bad habits and stresses related to TMJ.

If you are diagnosed with Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, there are many treatment options you have, from surgery to at-home remedies.
