If you keep in step with the latest trends, Dr. Paul Coleman has a timely tip that will help you look better and feel better, too. Say no to silver! In your teeth, that is.
Today, dentists on the forefront of their profession insist on metal-free dentistry.
Say “No More” to Metal
Once the only choices for filling cavities and restoring damaged teeth, it has been discovered that silver mercury fillings and metal amalgam restorations may actually be detrimental to your teeth and your health.
Not only do metal restorations detract from the appearance of the teeth, turning them dark and gray, but they also expand and contract with temperature changes. This movement can weaken and eventually fracture and break the teeth they were meant to protect. This movement also allows dangerous bacteria to get in under the filling, causing undetectable decay. Dr. Coleman rarely removes a metal filling without finding hidden cavities.
More worrisome is the mercury in the metal fillings. Every time you bite or chew, poisons in mercury fillings may leak, introducing toxins to your system.
A Stunning Style • A Healthy Smile
If you want to do all you can to assure your smile is the healthiest, most attractive it can be, insist on metal-free dentistry. Whether repairing a new cavity or replacing an existing metal filling, there are a variety of non-metal restorations that meet your needs.
For small cavities, tooth-colored composite resin fillings are ideal. Composite resin fillings are made in your dentist’s office and placed in your tooth in one office visit.
For larger cavities, porcelain inlays or onlays are used. Inlays are placed inside the tooth and onlays fill inside the tooth as well as cover the top or side of teeth.
Custom-made in labs from impressions of your tooth, porcelain inlays and onlays ensure a comfortable fit and a lasting, natural-looking restoration. More importantly, they strengthen the tooth.
Today, crowns can also be created in non-metal form to restore and protect teeth. All porcelain crowns are custom-made restorations that completely cover the teeth. Used to repair a tooth that has fractured, a large cavity, an old filling that has failed, or root canal therapy, crowns can also be used for cosmetic purposes, enhancing the appearance of a tooth that is discolored or misshapen.
