Over half of the American public suffered from gum disease, yet less then 4% yearly seek definitive treatment. We have known for years, when present, gum (periodontal) disease, causes bleeding gums, and a full-time challenge to a patient’s overall health.
If a patient has gum disease they are more likely to have a heart attack, stroke, diabetes, many different cancers, premature weight babies, in addition to bone loss around our teeth with will eventually lead to tooth loss.
Treatments for moderate to severe gum disease have generally been definitively treated with gum surgery. In this surgery, the gum tissue is cut and rolled back, the bone reshaped, and sometimes we have attempted to add bone grafts, and sutured back together (generally without much success).
The procedure is very painful; generally leaves tooth surface exposed, leading to ugly looking long teeth and often incredible sensitivity to your teeth.
But a new technology available at the Coleman Center can accomplish the desired effects, stable teeth, free from disease without scalpels, sutures, recession, pain or sensitivity. Additionally; this procedure will GROW BONE around teeth. Yes, GROW BONE.
Using an Nd:YAG Laser called Periolase, unbelievable benefits are now available for patients with mild, moderate or severe gum disease. The procedure is called LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Protocol), the device manufactured by Millennium Dental Technologies. The protocol has had been FDA Approved since March 1997. Due to the high cost of the equipment and training, this option is only available at 1000 offices nationwide.
Also, most gum surgery has been performed by a periodontist. They are trained to be surgeons. If you ask a surgeon for a treatment they suggest surgery. If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Laser therapy as a result has been shunned by the periodontic specialty. BUT, this year, more Periolase Lasers were sold to periodontist than any other group. I guess they are catching on.
There are only a handful of offices which utilize this treatment to help their patients in Southern California.
I am proud to say, in an on-going effort to improve the over-all health of my patients, the Coleman Center can now provide this level of non-invasive, conservative, definitive treatment for all levels of gum disease.
If you have gum disease and have been recommended surgery, have bleeding gums, have been told your gums are not as healthy as they should be, have been recommended surgery for the problem but dreaded the prospect, have had repeated “deep cleanings” over the years, only to see the condition relapse, you owe it to yourself to call for a free consultation today.
