There has been a break though in treating periodontal (gum) disease which has changed the way I, and eventually the entire dental profession, will look at handling this problem for our patients.
Well over 80% of the public had active, chronic gum infection going on in their mouth. Yet despite this disease of epidemic proportions being effectively handled, less than 4% of the public has this problem effectively handled annually. Why? The recommended surgical procedures are painful and give limited results.
Historically, when a patient has pockets of over 4 mm around the necks of their teeth, the suggestions are deep cleaning (often called root planning) or periodontal surgery. If the pockets are no greater than 4-5mm, deep cleanings and shorter reacre visits with the hygienist will often handle the problem effectively.
