Dental Implants

San Diego Cosmetic Dentist & Dental Implants with Dr. Paul Coleman

Dental implants are a permanent, full-tooth replacement option. This cosmetic dentistry procedure replaces the tooth and the root of the tooth for a long lasting healthy tooth. Dental implants are a great option for one missing tooth or multiple missing teeth.

Dental implants are more durable and last longer than bridges or partial dentures because they replace both the tooth and the root. This creates a stronger tooth replacement. Dental implants can be placed in the upper and lower jaws for a beautiful smile.

Dental Implant Benefits

Along with their durability and strength, dental implants have many benefits including that they:

  • Have the look and feel of natural teeth
  • Are cared for as your natural teeth
  • Prevent the shrinking of bones and gums
  • Can be replaced if damage occurs
  • Don’t need to be removed as dentures and partials do
  • Do not move when you are speaking or eating
  • Require little maintenance and are not visible
  • Will last a lifetime

The Dental Implant Procedure

San Diego Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Paul Coleman will match the porcelain crown that will be your artificial tooth to your original tooth. This new tooth will look like your natural teeth in shape and color. You will then be referred to an experienced oral surgeon to have the dental implant placed in your jawbone. Dr. Coleman will place the crown himself.

  1. The dental implant is placed in the jawbone.
The implant is a titanium rod that is placed in your jawbone. Several months are needed to allow your bone tissue to grow around the implant making it sturdy and strong. This process is called osseointegration. If the osseointegration fails, then your other options are a bridge or dentures. You will be ready for the next step after the implant is integrated into your jawbone.
  2. A prosthetic implant abutment is added to the top of the implant.
This is a small piece that is attached to the implant and can be made of titanium, gold, surgical stainless steel, or white ceramic. White ceramic is mainly used to add to the aesthetic look of the final result. This abutment will hold the new porcelain tooth. A few weeks are needed before the crown can be attached to the abutment.
  3. The new porcelain tooth is attached to the abutment.
Dr. Coleman will attach your new tooth to the abutment. This new tooth will have a life-like appearance and look natural.

You are a good candidate for dental implants if:

  • You have good oral health
  • Your jawbone is strong enough to hold the implant
  • You do not smoke since smoking increases implant rejection and slows the healing process
  • You have good general health
