San Diego Cosmetic Dentistry - Dental Bonding FAQWhat is dental bonding?

Bonding is a cosmetic dental procedure which uses a white composite resin to build up your tooth, rather than a shell of porcelain. It is painless, quick, and costs less than porcelain veneers or crowns.

What can bonding do for me?

Bonding has both cosmetic and restorative applications. Decayed teeth can be filled. Short, misshapen, or broken teeth can be built up or reshaped. It’s also great for discolored teeth which do not respond to whitening.

It protects damaged and decayed teeth from further harm and painful sensitivity.

I thought bonding made it look like you have metal teeth.

It used to, but not anymore. In the past, bonding was used only to repair and protect damaged teeth and it was silver in color. Now we match the bonding to the color of your natural teeth.

Will bonding require several visits?

No. Unlike porcelain veneers and inlays or onlays, which must be made in a lab, bonding is sculpted directly onto your tooth and then hardened, so we can do it all in one visit.

Will the procedure be painful?

No. No anesthetic is needed because no decay is being removed. The tooth surface will be slightly scuffed to bond more firmly with the dental bonding, but this is purely surface and not near the tooth’s nerve.
