Sedation and Sleep Dentistry Questions

San Diego, La Jolla and Poway

San Diego Cosmetic Dentistry - Sedation DentistryWhat is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses a combination of sedative pills and nitrous oxide to relax you, minimizing discomfort and making you more responsive to numbing medications. You will be conscious enough to respond to Dr. Coleman, but too drowsy to remember much.

What is sleep dentistry?

Sleep dentistry uses general anesthesia, not mere sedation. You will be completely unconscious throughout the procedure. To perform sleep dentistry, a dentist must be certified, as is  Dr. Coleman. It is a good choice for those who have not been able to tolerate dental procedures in the past.

Are sedation and sleep dentistry safe?

Yes. During sedation dentistry you will be breathing on your own and constantly monitored by our staff. During sleep dentistry you will be attended by a anesthesiologist.

Will sedation dentistry involve an injection?

No. Only sedative pills and nitrous oxide gas are required for sedation dentistry.

I am resistant to numbing, so will this work for me?

Yes, the oral sedatives and nitrous oxide relax your body, greatly reducing the cause of pain, and they make you more responsive to the numbing medication.

How much will I remember about the procedure?

With sedation dentistry you will remember very little, or nothing of the procedure. During sleep dentistry you will be unconscious and remember nothing at all.

Can I drive myself home?

No. You will need to arrange for someone to drive you home.
