What causes tooth discoloration?
Over time everyone’s teeth will become dull and yellowed. There are many reasons, including:
How does tooth whitening work?
Dr. Coleman offers the Zoom! In-Office Whitening system, which uses a light-activated gel to whiten your teeth. The active ingredient is Hydrogen Peroxide.
We also offer a more gradual at-home whitening kit if you would like to whiten your own teeth on your on schedule.
How long does the in-office procedure take?
The Zoom! In-Office procedure takes about an hour for the treatment itself. Allow a few more minutes for preparation and follow-up afterwards.
How white can my teeth get?
The end results will depend on how deeply your teeth are stained and on hereditary factors. Most people can see results up to 10 shades lighter than before their treatment.
Will tooth whitening damage or weaken my teeth?
No. Tooth whitening is safe and non-invasive. It will not damage your enamel or the inside of your teeth.
Can I whiten my fillings and crowns?
No. The materials used in fillings and crowns do not respond to tooth whitening. If you have dark, discolored, or failing dental restorations we can replace them with beautiful, natural-looking porcelain. If you would like to have porcelain veneers done, it will be best to whiten your teeth first, so Dr. Coleman can match the porcelain to your new bright color.
How long will my teeth stay white and bright?
This will depend on your personal habits. Avoid staining foods and beverages and take good care of your teeth with proper brushing and flossing to ensure that you get the most out of tooth whitening. The results can last for years. The Zoom! whitening system includes a take-home kit for touch-ups later on.
Is tooth whitening painful?
Tooth whitening is non-invasive, and most people have no trouble with it. Some people experience mild sensitivity during the in-office procedure. If necessary, the whitening can be paused and a de-sensitizing gel applied to make you more comfortable. You can choose which strength of whitening gel you would like in your take-home kit. Those kits include some de-sensitizing gel too.
