Endodontic care (root canals) is necessary when the nerve tissue in the tooth is irreversibly damaged due to decay, trauma, or tooth fracture.
A root canal, though scary-sounding, is generally a simple one or two visit procedure that allows you to retain a tooth that in previous decades the dentist would have removed.
When the nerve inside the tooth is damaged it can be very painful and as the decay continues to spread, the nerve will die. At that point, the pain will disappear, but don’t be deceived. Bacteria will continue to multiply. If you are in need of a root canal, sooner is better. Once this damaged tissue is removed and replaced with dental filling, you will be able to keep your tooth and chew normally again.
Dr. Coleman refers about 65% of patients needing a root canal to an endodontic specialist.
