Typical Checkup

Family Dentistry - Typical Checkup

While many family dentistry practices have board games or video games to keep your children entertained while enduring the waiting room, we provide our clients with the guarantee of a five minute wait or less from their scheduled appointment with Dr. Coleman.

Doing Everything We Can to Minimize Stress

We understand that many people experience dental anxiety. This anxiety can stem from a multitude of sources, but our practice does everything within its power to reduce and eliminate the origin of your stress.

  • We recognize our clients live busy lives. There’s nothing worse than twiddling your thumbs in a waiting room for an hour, which is why we guarantee no more than a five minute wait for our clients.
  • Dr. Coleman practices sedation dentistry, allowing you to take a pill an hour before your appointment and remain conscious and responsive while retaining no memory of the procedure.
  • Dr. Coleman is a graduate of the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, the nation’s premier school for post-graduate dental training.

A Typical Check-up

Once inside, a dental hygienist will first see your child. He/she will perform a preliminary exam of your child’s teeth, noting any changes, discuss proper oral hygiene techniques, and answer questions. Afterward, Dr. Coleman will arrive to:

  • Conduct a more thorough examination of the gums and teeth
  • Review the hygienist’s cleaning
  • Diagnose cavities, gum disease or any other oral health problems
  • Discuss treatment options and/or explain preventative measures your child can take for healthier oral health

Unlike general dentistry practices, the philosophy of family dentists is to educate their patients, as prevention is always superior to treatment.

Is Your Child Stressed About Their Visit?

Many children have as much dental anxiety as their parents do. If your child experiences dental stress at a young age, it’s going to carry over throughout their entire life, so it’s important to make them accustomed to dental checkups at a young age.

If your child is experiencing dental anxiety, there are many steps you can take as a parent to assuage this:

  • Monitor your anxiety. If you’re stressed, your child will notice and become stressed as well
  • If they are young enough, euphemize the experience with discussions of the tooth fairy
  • Provide them with a reward at the end of the day, such as their favorite meal so they have something to look forward to
