You do not have to live with TMJ. neuromuscular dentistry can treat and correct it, and your pain relief can begin with the first treatment, even in the diagnostic stage.
We use the same computerized analysis that has been used in medicine for years. The goal of these diagnostic tests is to provide individual and precise treatment plans that most often lead to elimination of pain. The underlying cause of this pain is muscular. We are different and more successful in treating TMJ signs and symptoms because we correct the muscles that are out of balance, causing the pain.
We start by assessing the health of the joint itself. We use Sonography (joint sound analysis) to evaluate the clicking and popping noises generated by the joint. In conjunction with special joint X-rays (corrected tomograms), these tests allow us to ascertain the extent of the damage to the joint itself.
To correct the jaw misalignment, we first relax the dysfunctional muscles. We do this by use of Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation (TENS). This technique allows us to relax over-worked (hypertonic) muscles into a position of optimum resting length.
We use the TENS in conjunction with Electromyography (EMG) and computerized jaw tracking to find the optimum position of the jaw. With the jaw in the ideal neuromuscular position, we can provide therapy to relieve and improve the health and performance of the muscles.
We can often help people who have had unsuccessful TMJ treatment in the past. Past treatments have usually centered on joint manipulation versus muscular balance. Focusing on the muscles gives the best avenue for success.
